John Swenson PhD

Senior Environmental Scientist, Mathematical Modeler

John has more than twenty years of experience tackling complex problems as an industry consultant and academic researcher, with areas of specialization that include hydrology, hydrogeology, sediment transport, heat transfer, and rock weathering. His experience for industry includes predictive modeling of mine-water chemistry, mine-waste weathering and constituent release, sediment movement in coastal and river systems, non-Newtonian tailings slurries, groundwater migration, and carbon sequestration.

John earned B.S. degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and a Ph.D. in geology and geophysics (minor field: civil engineering) from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at University of Minnesota Duluth, where he has been a faculty member since 2000.
